Bluff Chair

Architectural Record named it a 2023 Product of the Year; Hlynur Atlason shaped it like rock carved by the sea.

“You're comfortable and relaxed and free to think about other things,” Atlason says of the scooped seat balanced on a curved tripod base. Made in the USA with a high percentage of recycled post-consumer plastic, it drains rain through a hole in the seat and holds U.S. Design Patent D1,061,069. It joins the Limbo Chair in the Heller indoor-outdoor family.

Common Questions

What happens when it rains?
Nothing you need to manage — a drainage hole in the scooped seat prevents water from pooling, so the chair can stay out through storms and be dry again soon after.

Is it comfortable without cushions?
Yes. Atlason worked the angles and proportions so the scooped seat holds the body in a relaxed but supported position — no upholstery required, indoors or out.

Heller +

For over 50 years, Heller has redefined what modern design in plastic can be—industrial in process, sculptural in form, and endlessly sustainable in spirit. Founded in 1971, with its furniture made in the USA, Heller partners with some of the most celebrated names in design—Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Sergio Asti, Mario Bellini, and Frank Gehry, among others—to create bold, enduring pieces that are as collectible as they are functional. Their designs live in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and remain icons of modern living—equally at home in an urban loft or a sunlit patio.

At Comosum, we’re proud to carry Heller because their values mirror ours: timeless design, radical sustainability, and a commitment to originality. Its pieces are made from recyclable plastic, several of them with recycled post-consumer content, and Heller says it runs a closed-loop recycling program for them. Its Worry Free Plastics™ material is one Heller describes as 100% regenerative and microplastic-free at end of life, and Mario Bellini's chair for Heller won the Compasso d'Oro in 2001. This is furniture made for now, designed for forever, and backed by a vision of modernism that never imitates—only evolves.
