Conscious Chair

Børge Mogensen and Esben Klint drew this chair for Danish schools in 1958; Mater rebuilt it from waste.

It is the first Børge Mogensen design ever relaunched in a material other than the original: a Matek seat and back of recycled fiber and plastic waste on an FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)-certified wood frame. Wallpaper* named it the best sustainable step forward in its 2023 Smart Space Awards, and it anchors the heritage side of our Mater collection.

Yes. Mogensen and Esben Klint designed it in 1958 for Danish schools, which is why it is known as the school chair. Mater's reissue is the first Mogensen design relaunched in a new material.

What is the seat made of?
Matek, Mater's composite of recycled fiber waste — coffee shells or wood waste — bound with recycled plastic. Each chair contains about 2,140 grams of diverted waste on an FSC-certified wood frame.
