HAKAMA Dining Table

The Hamburg studio MHK shaped HAKAMA's legs after the pleated trousers of Japanese formal dress, the hakama.

Peter Maly, Birgit Hoffmann and Christoph Kahleyss cut grooves into each wide leg that deepen toward the floor, so the base seems to fan outward and settle, the way the folds of the garment do. CondeHouse builds the table at its own factory in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, with a solid walnut top over those carved legs: a large, calm table that reads as well in a dining room as in a meeting room. CondeHouse pairs it with its CHALLENGE chairs; both are in the CondeHouse collection.

Common Questions

How many people does HAKAMA seat?
Plan on eight around the 94 1/2 in table and six around the 82 3/4 in, allowing about 24 in per person. Both stand 29 1/4 in high, the usual height for dining chairs with an 18 in seat.

How quickly does it ship?
Quick-ship tables are in stock at CondeHouse USA in California and leave the warehouse within about a week of your order, while stock lasts. Other sizes and woods are made to order in Asahikawa, Japan, in about 16 weeks.

Is the top solid wood?
Yes. HAKAMA has a solid walnut top, random-matched from boards, so grain and color vary from table to table. Solid wood moves with the seasons; keep it out of direct sun and away from heater vents.

Care Guide +

CondeHouse warrants its products against defects in materials and workmanship for five years from the shipping date.

Wipe the wood with a soft, dry cloth and don't rub hard, which can work dust into the finish. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heater vents: strong light and dry heat can change the color of the wood and open small cracks.
