Maria Berntsen started from the shape of a bottle and hung a full-grain leather handle on it.

Design with Light is Holmegaard's portable candlelight — mouth-blown glass lanterns sized from a 6.5 in tabletop piece to a 17.7 in floor lantern, each carried by a leather strap. Because the glass is blown by hand, no two lanterns are the same. Made in Poland. Parent company Rosendahl Design Group is a Certified B Corp.

Common Questions

Why does each lantern look slightly different?
The glass is mouth-blown, so wall thickness, color depth, and the curve of the shoulder vary. Holmegaard describes every lantern in the series as utterly unique for that reason.

Which size works outdoors?
The 17.7 in floor lantern and the 11.4 in are the ones that hold their own on a terrace or step; the 6.5 in and 9.8 in sizes are tabletop pieces.

How do I clean it?
Wipe the glass by hand and keep the leather handle out of water — full-grain leather stiffens and stains if it is soaked or machine washed.

Hand-wash in warm water with mild detergent and dry immediately with a soft cloth to preserve clarity. Avoid abrupt temperature changes and direct flame. Most Holmegaard and Rosendahl glassware is mouth-blown — small bubbles or seams are part of the craft, not defects. Store upright with space between pieces; do not stack. Dishwasher-safe items are noted on the inner gift box.
