Compound Dining Chair

OEO Studio drew this stacking dining chair for Mater, and each one locks up 4,330 grams of waste material.

The seat and back are Matek, Mater's patented composite that binds recycled fiber waste, coffee shells or wood waste, with recycled plastic. The shell is press-molded onto a frame of 20 percent recycled steel in a matte black powder coat. Mater, the Copenhagen design house founded in 2006, presses its Matek in a hydropower-run facility and builds this chair in Latvia for private and public rooms alike. It is the workhorse dining chair of our Mater collection, and it stacks eight high when you want the floor back.

Is the Compound Dining Chair stackable?
Yes. Mater rates it for stacks of up to eight chairs without upholstery and four with upholstery, so spare seating for a dinner party stores in a closet corner rather than a spare room.

Is Matek durable enough for daily dining?
Yes. The press-molded shell sits on a welded frame of 20 percent recycled steel, and Mater rates the chair for public as well as private use, which means cafe-level daily wear.

What gives each color its tone?
The waste stream does. Coffee-shell blends read warm brown through near-black; wood waste reads gray. Slight variation in fleck and tone between chairs is natural to a recycled composite.
