Nestor Armchair

Tom Stepp drew the Nestor collection out of Shaker tradition: a hand-woven paper cord seat on a frame of honest, visible joinery.

The frame is FSC-certified solid beech or oak under a water-based, low-VOC lacquer, which keeps solvent out of the room the chair lives in. The seat is woven by hand from biodegradable, FSC-certified paper cord. The armchair adds a wide armrest that matches the width of the back, so the arm has a real surface to rest on, and at 11 pounds it lifts with one hand. It is the most quietly traditional chair in our Mater collection.

Care

Dust with a soft dry cloth and vacuum the paper cord on a low setting; wipe the frame with a damp cloth and dry at once; keep the cord dry and out of prolonged direct sun

Common Questions

Is a paper cord seat durable?
Yes. Hand-woven paper cord is the traditional Danish seat material and handles decades of daily use. When it finally wears, an upholsterer re-weaves the seat instead of the chair being replaced.

Will the armrests fit under my table?
The 26.6-inch armrest height clears most 29-to-30-inch dining tables with shallow aprons. Measure your apron if its underside sits lower than about 27 inches, because the arms will stop the chair tucking in.

Is it strong enough for an office or restaurant?
Mater tests the Nestor chairs for stability to EN 16139:2013 level L1, the European contract seating standard, and fits hard plastic gliders as standard. Mater specifies the chair for indoor use.
