Nestor Sidechair

Tom Stepp pared the Danish dining chair back to Shaker essentials: woven paper cord, visible joinery and nothing else.

The frame is FSC-certified solid beech or oak finished with water-based, low-VOC lacquer, and the seat is hand-woven from biodegradable, FSC-certified paper cord. Nestor means the noblest and, by implication, the wisest, which is a lot to ask of a dining chair, but the proportions carry it: 19.7 inches wide, 9.9 pounds, and narrow enough to fit six around a table most rooms can hold. It is the armless companion to the Nestor Armchair in our Mater collection.

Care

Dust with a soft dry cloth and vacuum the paper cord on a low setting; wipe the frame with a damp cloth and dry at once; keep the cord dry and out of prolonged direct sun

Common Questions

How long does a paper cord seat last?
Decades with normal dining use. It is the same hand-woven material Danish chairmakers have used since the 1940s, and an upholsterer can re-weave the seat when it finally wears through.

What is the difference from the Nestor Armchair?
Only the arms and the width. Both share Tom Stepp's Shaker-inspired frame in FSC-certified beech or oak and the same 17.3-inch seat height; the sidechair is 19.7 inches wide against the armchair's 22.0.

Can I use it around a desk or in a cafe?
Yes. Mater tests the Nestor chairs for stability to EN 16139:2013 level L1, the European contract seating standard, and fits hard plastic gliders as standard. Mater specifies the chair for indoor use.
