Ocean Lounge Chair

Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel drew this low outdoor lounger in 1955; Mater casts its slats from recovered plastic waste.

Part of the Ocean Collection from Mater, the Copenhagen design house and certified B Corp, the lounge chair uses five recovered waste streams: ocean waste plastic with recycled polypropylene in Black and Sand, pharma plastic waste in Green, and post-consumer e-waste in Burnt Red and Dusty Blue. The low 15.4-inch seat and reclined back suit poolsides and long afternoons, on the same gunmetal steel frame as the rest of our Mater collection. The collection is designed for disassembly, and Mater sells replacement slats in all five colors.

Common Questions

Is the Ocean Lounge Chair weatherproof?
Yes. The Ocean Collection is made and tested for outdoor use. The recycled plastic slats shed rain and sun, and the powder-coated steel frame needs only an occasional wipe down.

What is each color actually made from?
Black and Sand slats are ocean waste plastic with recycled polypropylene. Green is recycled pharma plastic waste, including discarded insulin pens. Burnt Red and Dusty Blue are post-consumer e-waste.

Does it need a cushion?
No cushion ships with it and none is required; the slats are contoured and the seat sits low at 15.4 inches. Mater does not list a cushion for the Ocean Collection.
