Japanese Zen gardens shaped Kristine Five Melvær's three-dimensional grey mat, built to handle real weather at the door.
Norwegian brand Heymat makes Stein for the rough end of the job: a rugged surface of 100% recycled PET scrapes grit off shoes before it gets inside, while the rubberized backing blocks moisture from reaching floors. At roughly 0.4 in thick, it works indoors or out, and each handcrafted mat carries slight variations in tone and texture.
