Alder Lounge Table Oval

Patricia Urquiola's Alder collection is Mater's first in biodegradable Matek, and this 32.3-inch oval is its lounge table.

Matek is Mater's press-molded composite of waste fibre and a plastic binder; the Alder blends pair biodegradable plastic with coffee-shell waste in Sand and Earth Grey, and with wood waste in Light Green and Terracotta. Mater press-molds the mix into a single soft, monolithic body in Latvia, specified for indoor use, and takes Matek furniture back at end of life to recycle into new pieces. The oval sits low at 12.4 inches, which reads as a plinth more than a table beside a sofa. It opened a new chapter in the material research behind our Mater collection.

Can Alder tables be used outdoors?
No — Mater specifies the Alder collection for indoor use. Keep the Matek surface away from prolonged moisture, excessive heat and direct sun so the color and finish hold.

What exactly is biodegradable Matek?
Mater's press-molded composite of waste fibre and a binder. In Sand and Earth Grey the binder is biodegradable plastic and the fibre is coffee-shell waste, so the material can eventually decompose.

Will the surface mark or vary?
Matek is water-repellent and easy to wipe clean, but Mater notes variation between pieces because the inputs are recycled. Use trivets under hot pots and cups to protect the top.
