Alder Lounge Table Square

Patricia Urquiola squared off the Alder lounge table at 27.6 inches, in Mater's first biodegradable Matek collection.

Matek is Mater's press-molded composite of waste fibre and a plastic binder; the Alder blends pair biodegradable plastic with coffee-shell waste in Sand and Earth Grey, and with wood waste in Light Green and Terracotta. Mater press-molds the compound in Latvia into one continuous body 12.4 inches high, specified for indoor use. The square plan suits a symmetrical room where the oval version would fight the geometry, and the material is water-repellent and highly durable by Mater's own account. Both shapes live in our Mater collection.

Is the Alder Lounge Table Square an indoor or outdoor piece?
Indoor — Mater specifies the whole Alder collection for indoor use, and the Matek surface keeps best away from prolonged moisture, excessive heat and direct sunlight.

Why does the surface show slight variation?
Because the inputs are recycled coffee-shell waste, Mater notes that variation between pieces is possible. Each table's surface is effectively one of a kind rather than a printed finish.

What happens to it at the end of its life?
Mater operates a take-back program for all Matek furniture and recycles returned pieces into new furniture. The Alder blend also uses biodegradable plastic as the binder.

For wood surfaces, use a damp cloth with mild soap and dry immediately. For recycled composite surfaces, wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and prolonged sun exposure. Re-oil wood products periodically as needed.
