Bowl Table Small

Ayush Kasliwal designed the Bowl Table for Mater, and every top is turned on a lathe by woodturners from India's Kharadi community.

Kasliwal's brief was to reconcile old Indian craftsmanship with Scandinavian restraint. The top is mango wood, timber from trees retired after their fruit-bearing years, sealed with a lead-free, water-based PU lacquer that leaves the grain visible. Milled hollow-steel legs detach for transport, which is how a solid wood table ships at eleven pounds. The Small is the one that tucks beside a reading chair, and it stacks up visually with the Medium and Large as a stepped vignette, the way Mater shows the family in our Mater collection.

Common Questions

Does it need assembly?
Only the legs. The milled hollow-steel rods are made to detach for transport and fix back to the underside of the top, so the table arrives flat and goes together in a few minutes.

Why mango wood rather than oak?
Mango trees are felled after their fruit-bearing years, so the timber is a byproduct of an orchard cycle that already exists. It is dense enough for furniture and carries a warmer, more irregular grain than oak.

Will my table look like the photograph?
Close, not identical. Every top is turned from solid mango wood, so grain, figure and tone shift from piece to piece, and the Black and Sirka Grey lacquers let that variation read through.
