Stand Bottle Opener

Terence Woodgate, a Royal Designer for Industry since 2003 whose work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, designed the Stand as a bottle opener that stays upright on the bar instead of vanishing into a drawer.

Woodgate works by subtraction, and the Stand is close to the minimum a bottle opener can be: a tapered cone that flares into a single oval loop, cast as one piece of stainless steel and polished. The weight is the point. At 280 grams, just over half a pound, the cone has enough mass to stand on its own and enough heft to lift a cap cleanly. Case, the London design house Paul Newman founded in 2005, has produced Woodgate’s furniture and lighting since its first collection; the Stand is the smallest object in that partnership, made in Vietnam with the Case logo cast into the base.

Common Questions

Is the Stand Bottle Opener dishwasher safe?
Yes. Case rates the Stand as dishwasher safe, and there is no plating or coating to lift: it is cast from solid stainless steel and polished. Hand washing and drying keeps the mirror finish brightest.

Will it actually stand up on a bar?
Yes, by design. The tapered cone puts the 280-gram mass low, so the opener stands upright on any flat surface. There is no base plate or magnet; the shape alone keeps it up.

Will it rust or tarnish?
Stainless steel resists corrosion, so it will not rust in normal kitchen use, and polished stainless does not tarnish like silver plate or brass. Water spots can dull the shine, so wipe it dry after washing.

Case +

Case is a London design house founded in 2005 by Paul Newman, who had spent the previous two decades designing, manufacturing and retailing furniture through Bonomi Design and the Aero stores. The brief from the start was authored design at fair prices: every product is developed with a named designer (Matthew Hilton, Terence Woodgate, Robin Day and Aaron Probyn among them), made in batch production by specialist factories, and sold through retailers such as John Lewis, Heal's, Liberty and Design Within Reach.

Comosum carries Case because the range is built to be kept. Case backs every product with a 2-year warranty, works with manufacturing partners that hold FSC certification and, in a number of cases, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 management systems, and treats longevity rather than novelty as its sustainability strategy.
