Valentine Bed

Matthew Hilton, elected a Royal Designer for Industry in 2005, designed the Valentine Bed as the centerpiece of his Valentine bedroom range for Case.

Hilton's furniture borrows from long-established forms rather than fashion, and the Valentine Bed shows it: a solid oak frame on gently tapered legs that point outward, a large solid oak headboard of vertical slats, and no ornament beyond the proportions. Case builds it in Lithuania from solid oak under a clear polyurethane lacquer, in natural Oak or Walnut Stain, and ships it flat-packed with a birch sprung slat kit. Components are replaceable: the frame is engineered to be repaired, not replaced.

Common Questions

Which mattress fits the Super King?
A 180 x 200 cm mattress, about 70.8 x 78.7 in, the size sold as a UK Super King. A standard US King at 76 x 80 in is too wide for this frame and a US Queen too narrow. Mattress not included.

Do I need a box spring?
No. A birch sprung slat kit is included and supports the mattress directly inside the frame, so it works as a platform bed. Any mattress suited to a slatted base is fine; a box spring is not needed.

How much assembly is involved?
The bed ships flat-packed and Case specifies two-person assembly, with step-by-step instructions published as a PDF. Components are replaceable, so a damaged part can be reordered rather than the whole bed.
