Ethnicraft

Solid-wood furniture from Antwerp, made to age well

Benoit Loos and Philippe Delaisse founded Ethnicraft in Antwerp more than 30 years ago. It makes solid oak and teak furniture in its own factories, and its Re-Loved programme refurbishes pieces for a second life.

  • Solid wood, oiled or water-based varnished
  • Serbian factory runs on wood-residue energy
  • Re-Loved: refurbished for a second life

Corto Dining Table

Alain van Havre took the Corto dining table from the vaults of grand architecture: a 59-inch square top of solid oak with softly rounded corners, held up by a single central pedestal.

The central foot is the point. With no leg at each corner, guests can pull chairs in anywhere around the table, and Ethnicraft says the base gives practical stability with less leg disturbance. The top is solid oak finished with hardwax oil, which keeps a natural, matte surface that can be refreshed over the years. It is made in Serbia, at the Ethnicraft site that uses its own wood residue for energy.

Common Questions

Why a central base instead of four legs?
Ethnicraft designed the Corto's central-footed base for stability with less leg disturbance. With no corner legs to straddle, chairs can be placed anywhere around the 59-inch square top.

How do I care for an oiled oak top?
Hardwax oil protects the oak while keeping a natural, matte surface. Wipe spills promptly, dust with a dry cloth and refresh the finish over time; Ethnicraft sells an Osmo oak liquid wax cleaner and Osmo oak hardwax oil for this.

Does it need assembly?
Yes, some. Ethnicraft publishes assembly instructions for the Corto, and the table weighs 123.5 pounds, so plan on two people to unpack it and set it up.
