Earth Stool

Danish architect Eva Harlou press-molds this bar stool's seat from coffee-shell waste supplied by the roaster BKI.

The waste-to-value technique behind it was developed with the Danish Technological Institute and supported by the University of Copenhagen: coffee shells and recycled post-consumer plastic are blended into a compound Mater calls Matek, then press-molded into a smooth, pebble-textured seat. That seat sits on a gun-metal powder-coated steel frame, so the stool reads as one continuous circular line. It is the most literal expression of the circular thinking running through our Mater collection, and it comes in two heights.

Which Earth Stool height fits my counter?
The 27.2-inch stool suits kitchen counters around 36 inches; the 29.1-inch version fits bar counters of 40 inches and up. Allow roughly 10 inches between the seat and the counter underside.

What exactly is Matek?
Matek is Mater's own composite. Coffee shells from BKI coffee and recycled post-consumer plastic waste are blended into a compound suitable for press molding, a process Mater developed with the Danish Technological Institute.

Is the coffee-waste seat durable?
Yes. The seat is press-molded Matek rather than a coating or a veneer, so the material runs all the way through, and it is bolted to a powder-coated steel frame built for cafe and bar use.
