J53 Armchair - Taupe

The armchair that helped Denmark shed its heavy upholstery, back after seventy years — in taupe.

Volther's 1953 J53 for FDB Møbler introduced a lighter, functionalist alternative to the fully stuffed living-room chairs of its era. The 2024 relaunch pairs a nature-oiled oak frame with Grain Taupe (61230) upholstery — soft color, spare frame.

Common Questions

How big is the J53 in a room?
Compact — 25.8 inches wide and about 31 inches deep, with an open oak frame that keeps sight lines clear where fully upholstered chairs block them.

What launched alongside the J53 in 1953?
A matching 2-seater sofa — Volther conceived the design as a light seating family, of which this armchair is the relaunched centerpiece.

Care Guide +

FDB Møbler furniture is crafted from FSC-certified wood, powder-coated steel, and OEKO-TEX textiles. Keep away from direct heat and sunlight. Dust with a soft cloth; clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. For lacquered surfaces, avoid harsh chemicals. For oiled wood, re-oil periodically. For upholstery, vacuum regularly and address spills promptly. Lift furniture rather than dragging across floors.
