J53 Armchair - Beige

Cream bouclé-toned upholstery on an open oak frame — the gentlest reading of Volther's 1953 breakthrough.

The J53 armchair returned to the FDB Møbler lineup in 2024, seventy-one years after Volther's light functionalist design challenged the fully upholstered norm. This version pairs nature-oiled oak with Monza Beige (00) fabric.

Materials

Oak, nature oiled; upholstered in Monza, Beige (00)

Dimensions

25.8 in W x 30.8 in D x 30.6 in H; 20.7 lbs

Designer

Poul M. Volther, 1953 (relaunched 2024)

Certifications

FDB Møbler holds FSC chain-of-custody certification (FSC-C164841) and is distributed in North America by Rosendahl Design Group, a Certified B Corporation

Common Questions

Will pale beige upholstery stay presentable?
The Monza fabric's textured surface hides everyday contact better than flat weaves, and the exposed oak frame takes the arm-wear an upholstered arm would absorb.

Why did Volther design the J53 this way?
The early 1950s called for lighter, more modern furniture — his simple functionalist frame with separate cushions answered that moment and helped set the Danish template.

Care Guide +

FDB Møbler furniture is crafted from FSC-certified wood, powder-coated steel, and OEKO-TEX textiles. Keep away from direct heat and sunlight. Dust with a soft cloth; clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. For lacquered surfaces, avoid harsh chemicals. For oiled wood, re-oil periodically. For upholstery, vacuum regularly and address spills promptly. Lift furniture rather than dragging across floors.
