Ethnicraft

Solid-wood furniture from Antwerp, made to age well

Benoit Loos and Philippe Delaisse founded Ethnicraft in Antwerp more than 30 years ago. It makes solid oak and teak furniture in its own factories, and its Re-Loved programme refurbishes pieces for a second life.

  • Solid wood, oiled or water-based varnished
  • Serbian factory runs on wood-residue energy
  • Re-Loved: refurbished for a second life

Fin Side Table

Alain van Havre designed the Fin side table as a successor to his Geometric side table: curved fins of black-tinted, FSC-certified solid teak under a round top, so it reads as a different sculpture from every angle.

Ethnicraft describes it as one shape with a thousand possibilities. Van Havre arrived at it by playing with forms, and the negative space between the fins keeps the piece moving as you walk around it. The teak is tinted black and sealed with varnish, so the grain still shows through the color. It is made in Indonesia for Ethnicraft, the Antwerp furniture house. At 19.5 inches across and 19.5 inches high, it sits beside a sofa or a reading chair without crowding the room.

Common Questions

Is it the right height for a sofa?
At 19.5 inches high it sits close to the arm height of most sofas and lounge chairs, and the 19.5-inch round top holds a lamp, a drink and a book without spilling into the walkway.

How do I look after the black finish?
The black-tinted teak is sealed with varnish, which protects against stains, but wipe spills up straight away. Dust with a dry cloth, clean with a damp cloth and natural soap, and use coasters under hot or wet glasses.

Is the teak certified?
Yes. Ethnicraft specifies FSC-certified solid teak for the Fin, so the wood is traced to forests certified to Forest Stewardship Council standards. It is tinted black, varnished and made in Indonesia.

Care Guide +

Dust with a dry cloth. For cleaning or a spill, use a damp cloth with natural soap, wipe in the direction of the grain, then dry with a soft clean cloth. Do not use detergents or chemical cleaners. Use coasters, placemats or a mat under hot, wet or heavy objects, as heat and repeated daily wear can mark the varnish.
