Freedom Ocean Headrest

Niels Diffrient's weight-sensitive recline needs no lever — the chair reads your body and holds it there.

Humanscale builds the Freedom Ocean with up to 4.2 pounds of plastic upcycled from ocean and coastal environments, including discarded fishing nets. The headrest travels with you as you lean back, the arms follow the backrest, and the only settings you touch by hand are seat height and seat depth. See the rest of the range in our Humanscale collection.

Common Questions

Does the Freedom Ocean need readjusting when someone else sits in it?
No. The recline is weight-sensitive and recalibrates on its own, and the headrest follows the recline. Only seat height and seat depth are set by hand, so a shared chair works immediately for the next person.

What does the ocean plastic actually do?
Humanscale incorporates up to 4.2 pounds of plastic recovered from ocean and coastal environments — largely discarded fishing nets — into the chair's structural components, not as a surface layer.

Will it fit a taller or heavier sitter?
The chair is certified to 400 pounds, with seat height adjusting from 16.1 to 20.25 inches and seat depth from 17.4 to 19.85 inches, which covers a wide range of body sizes.
