Ocean Chair
Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel drew this garden chair in 1955; Mater casts its slats from recovered plastic waste and sells them individually as spares.
The Ditzels’ light, slatted frames were reissued by Mater, the Copenhagen design house whose Ocean remake won Best Net Gain at the 2019 Wallpaper* Design Awards, around five recovered waste streams: ocean waste plastic with recycled polypropylene in Black and Sand, pharma plastic waste in Green, and post-consumer e-waste in Burnt Red and Dusty Blue. The partly recycled steel tube frame carries a gunmetal powder coat, matching the tables and benches in our Mater collection. The collection is designed for disassembly, and Mater sells replacement slats in all five colors.

Common Questions
Can the Ocean Chair stay outside all year?
Yes. It is made and tested for outdoor use, with weather-resistant recycled plastic slats and a powder-coated steel frame. In hard winters, dry storage will extend the finish's life.
What is each color actually made from?
Black and Sand slats are ocean waste plastic with recycled polypropylene. Green is recycled pharma plastic waste, including discarded insulin pens. Burnt Red and Dusty Blue are post-consumer e-waste.
Can a damaged slat be replaced?
Yes. Mater sells a replacement lamella with four 4 mm screws for the Ocean Chair and Bench in every color, so a scratched or cracked slat does not retire the chair.
