All wood, no upholstery: the J48 stripped to Volther's essentials in oak and natural veneer.

This J48 chair runs nature-lacquered solid oak through frame and natural veneer seat alike — the purest version of Poul M. Volther's 1951 design for FDB Møbler, its rounded, separate backrest doing the comfort work upholstery does elsewhere.

Is a veneer seat comfortable without padding?
Yes for typical meals — the seat is shaped and the floating backrest carries much of the comfort; add an R5 Nøje leather or wool cushion for longer sittings.

Why choose the all-wood version?
Nothing to stain, nothing to reupholster — the wooden J48 is the lowest-maintenance and most sculptural reading of the design.
