The Best Eco-Friendly Furniture Brands in 2026: 12 Makers We Vetted

By Comosum · Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

The short answer

Judge a furniture retailer or brand by what it can prove: named third-party certifications such as B Corp, FSC or ISO 14001 rather than words like “eco-conscious”, a country of make for every piece, named materials, a long warranty, and spare parts or repair. Comosum grades every brand it sells on six published categories. Standouts: Fermob and Isimar outdoors, Humanscale for the office, Tikamoon and FDB Møbler in solid wood, Anglepoise for lighting.

How do you tell which furniture retailers and brands are actually sustainable?

Ask what they can prove. A store with real standards publishes the evidence behind every brand it sells. These checks work on any studio, direct-to-consumer brand or store, us included:

Certificates, not adjectives

B Corp, FSC and ISO 14001 come from outside bodies and can be looked up. “Eco-conscious” can’t.

Ask for: a license number

Where it’s made

A country for every product, ideally a named factory: it tells you how far a piece travels and whose labor laws apply.

Ask for: “made in” on each product

What it’s made of

Wood by species, recycled content as a percentage, the finish by name. Vague lists often hide particleboard.

Ask for: materials per product

How long it lasts

A warranty of five years or more, a test standard such as BIFMA or EN 581, and designs made for decades.

Ask for: warranty terms in writing

Repair and take-back

Anglepoise sells more than 60 spare parts; Tikamoon buys back and repairs its own furniture.

Ask for: a parts list or buy-back page

Red flags

“Green” with no certificate, “carbon neutral” with no published footprint, and no country of make anywhere.

Treat these as marketing

How does Comosum grade the brands it sells?

We run those checks on every brand before we list it. The Comosum Sustainability Meter scores each brand from 1 to 5 in six categories:

  • Material: certified, recycled or rapidly renewable content
  • Transportation: where it’s made and how it reaches the US
  • Manufacturing: ISO 14001, B Corp or published production data
  • Labor: B Corp, audits and named factories, the ethical side
  • Energy: factory energy or, for lamps, the energy used at home
  • Durability: warranties, spare parts, test standards, long-running designs

Certificates, published figures and juried awards earn the top scores; a claim with nothing behind it earns no credit. A brand must average at least 3.0, with no category at 1, before we carry it. Our directory of sustainable furniture brands grades every maker we carry.

Which certifications count: B Corp, FSC, GREENGUARD or “carbon neutral”?

Each label answers a different question. Our certification glossary covers the rest.

Label What it proves Brands at Comosum that show it
B Corp The whole company meets B Lab’s social and environmental standards Humanscale, Anglepoise, Tala, Tikamoon, Tiptoe, Petite Friture, UMAGE, and Kähler and Holmegaard through Rosendahl Design Group
FSC Wood from responsibly managed forests, with a tracked chain of custody; not the glue or finish FDB Møbler, Mater, Aakjaer, Tikamoon (part of its range), Ethnicraft (select teak lines)
GREENGUARD Gold, SCS Indoor Advantage Gold Low chemical emissions from one tested product, not a whole brand Humanscale’s World LM and Path chairs (SCS Indoor Advantage Gold)
ISO 14001 An audited environmental management system at the factory Fermob, Resol
Nordic Swan Ecolabel Lifecycle criteria for a product, chemical content included FDB Møbler’s J80 and J81 chairs
EPDs and life-cycle assessments A measured footprint, verified by a third party Humanscale, Varier (most models)

Offsets don’t change what a factory emits, so ask what any “carbon neutral” claim covers and who checked it. We did that for Isimar’s “carbon negative” claim.

Which sustainable furniture brands stand out, by category?

The makers we’d point a friend to first, and what each can show. Prices, stock and grades update on their own.

Outdoor and patio: Fermob, Isimar, Resol

Fermob builds steel and aluminum furniture in its own French factories, holds ISO 14001 certification and draws 15–42% of site power from rooftop solar; its Bistro chair has been made since 1889. Isimar uses 100% recycled steel and aluminum. Resol makes everything in-house in Spain, with recycled polypropylene in lines such as Brisa.

Fermob Luxembourg rocking chair and low armchair in aluminum, made in France.

Office: Humanscale and Varier

Humanscale, a B Corp, builds in its own TRUE Zero Waste plants in the US and Mexico and publishes verified life-cycle assessments. Varier, designed in Norway and made in Poland, has verified EPDs for most models and up to 10 years’ warranty when you register. More in our office chair guide.

Dining, bedroom and solid wood: Tikamoon, FDB Møbler, Ethnicraft

Tikamoon, a B Corp, builds in solid wood and buys back and repairs its own furniture. FDB Møbler tests every piece at the Danish Technological Institute. Ethnicraft makes solid oak and teak in its own factories; the Serbian oak factory runs on wood-residue energy. Comparing dining chairs? Set FDB’s oiled-oak J80 beside Varier’s Social Tilt, 55–75% recycled plastic.

Lighting: Anglepoise and Tala

For lamps we score the energy used in your home, so look for an LED you can replace. Anglepoise and Tala are both B Corps; Tala’s replaceable bulbs are rated at 90 lumens per watt.

A 1930s spring formula, guaranteed for life

George Carwardine, an automotive engineer, worked out a spring formula in 1932 that holds a lamp’s arm wherever you leave it. It went into production as the Original 1227 in 1935. Anglepoise still designs in Hampshire, England, and builds its lamps to be serviced part by part, so a worn spring or shade is replaced on its own instead of the whole lamp.

Tableware: Kähler and Holmegaard

Rosendahl Design Group has been a B Corp since 2024, and its B Lab listing names Kähler and Holmegaard. Kähler has made ceramics in Næstved, Denmark, since 1839; Holmegaard, Denmark’s oldest glasshouse, dates from 1825.

Questions people ask

What are the best sustainable and ethical furniture brands?

Brands that can prove their claims. By category: Fermob, Isimar and Resol outdoors; Humanscale and Varier for the office; Tikamoon, FDB Møbler and Ethnicraft for solid wood; Anglepoise and Tala for lighting; Kähler and Holmegaard for tableware.

Which furniture retailers have the best sustainability standards?

Those that publish their evidence: certificates you can look up, where each piece is made, materials and warranties. Comosum scores every brand it sells, patio and office included, on six published categories and shows the scores on each product page.

Which furniture brands are GREENGUARD certified?

GREENGUARD Gold certifies products, not brands, so ask for the certificate for the exact piece and check UL’s online directory. At Comosum, Humanscale’s World LM and Path chairs list SCS Indoor Advantage Gold, another third-party emissions certification.

Are there carbon-neutral furniture brands?

Few makers publish the audited footprint that claim needs, and offsets don’t cut factory emissions. Look for measured data instead: Humanscale’s verified life-cycle assessments, Varier’s verified EPDs, Tikamoon’s product carbon footprints, or the 730 kW of solar at Isimar’s factory.

Which furniture brands use FSC-certified wood?

At Comosum: FDB Møbler (FSC-C164841), Tikamoon (FSC-C143349, part of its range), Mater, Aakjaer, WOUD’s sofas and storage, Tiptoe’s FSC- or PEFC-certified oak, and Ethnicraft’s teak on select lines. FSC covers where the wood came from, not glue or finish.

Which Scandinavian furniture brands are eco-conscious?

FDB Møbler is FSC chain-of-custody certified, and its J80 and J81 chairs carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Varier has verified EPDs for most models. UMAGE, a Copenhagen B Corp, ships most designs flat-packed to cut transport emissions and sells spare parts.

How do I know if a furniture brand’s sustainability claims are legitimate?

Each claim should name something you can check: a license number, a recycled-content figure, a named factory or written warranty terms. Look up B Corps in B Lab’s directory and FSC licenses in FSC’s database. Adjectives alone, however high-end the brand, are marketing.
