Dining Tables for Small Spaces: How to Fit a Dinner Party Into a Small Apartment

Mater Compound dining chairs around a round oak Mater table by tall windows

Dining tables for small spaces earn their place by changing size: they fold flat, extend only when guests arrive, or seat four on a top under 30 inches across. Fermob's Bistro table, a café design dating to 1889, folds against a wall; Case's Bridge opens from 43.3 to 63 inches; and Fermob's Luxembourg chairs stack ten high. Comosum, a sustainable furniture store in Brooklyn, collects them with wall shelves and two-job stools in one small-space furniture collection.

A small apartment rarely has a dining room. It has a corner of the kitchen, the end of a living room, a wall by the window. The question is not which table is prettiest but which one gives the floor back when nobody is eating, and still seats six on Thanksgiving. Below we work through the table first, then the chairs, then the walls and the pieces that do double duty, because in a small home those four decisions are really one.

How to Choose Dining Tables for Small Spaces

Measure the clearance, not the table. The National Kitchen & Bath Association's Kitchen Planning Guidelines (Guideline 8) allow 32 inches from a table edge to the wall where nobody walks behind a seated diner, 36 inches for someone to edge past, and 44 inches to walk past. In a 10-foot-wide room, 36 inches on each side leaves 48 inches for the table; push one long side against the wall and you get that 36 inches back.

Pick round for tight corners. A round top has no corners to bump and lets a third chair slide in. Mater's Accent Cafe Table by Space Copenhagen is 27.6 inches across on a three-legged column base, so neither diner fights a table leg, and it ships flat-packed in one box.

Choose an everyday size, then add leaves. An extending table keeps the daily footprint small and stores its own guest seats. The 43.3-inch square Bridge Extension Table by Matthew Hilton for Case seats four daily and six extended, at 63 inches with one leaf. Ethnicraft's Bok Extendable Dining Table by Alain van Havre goes from 47 to 71 inches in solid oak. For bigger gatherings, our guide to extendable dining tables for holiday hosting covers the larger sizes.

Or fold it away. Fermob's Bistro tables are lacquered steel on a folding base that stores flat against a wall. The 24-inch round is set for two, the 28-inch square is sized for four, and the 38-inch round seats five.

Check how it moves. If you rent, the next apartment matters too. Tiptoe's oak-veneer dining table has four steel legs that screw straight into the top and come off when you move; the 47.2 x 23.6-inch size seats four. Case's Prinds Table by Jenkins & Uhnger, 43.3 x 29.5 inches, seats four and works as a desk between meals.

Chairs That Stack or Fold

The table is half the footprint. Four chairs pushed in still take a strip of floor, so in a small apartment the chairs that matter most are the ones you can put away. Fermob's Luxembourg Side Chair, Frédéric Sofia's 2004 aluminum update of the 1923 chairs in Paris's Jardin du Luxembourg, stacks ten high, and so does the steel Opera+ Side Chair. OEO Studio's Compound Dining Chair for Mater stacks eight high without upholstery, and each one locks up 4,330 grams of waste material in its Matek shell.

Heller's Bellini Chair by Mario and Claudio Bellini is molded in the USA from fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene and stacks six high; the counter-height version stacks five, for kitchens where the island is the dining table. Tiptoe's SSD Wood Dining Chair stacks six and comes apart for a move. And the Fermob Bistro chair folds flat instead: it is the folding steel chair that let Parisian bistro owners clear a terrace in minutes.

Free the Floor With Wall Shelves and Hooks

Every surface you lift off the floor gives a small room back some of its width. Tiptoe's PLI Steel Wall Shelf is one sheet of steel folded into a shelf, made in Lithuania and fixed through two holes in the shelf itself, from $110. The BRACKET Wall Shelf Set pairs a PEFC/FSC-certified solid oak board with two folded steel mounts and comes apart with a screwdriver.

For longer runs, Terence Woodgate's Slot Shelving for Case is a wall system only 10.2 inches deep, and Ethnicraft's PI Wall-Mounted Desk by Alain van Havre has no legs at all. By the bed, WOUD's Wallie Wall Mounted Drawer, an 11.8-inch wood drawer held by a magnet in a bent metal bracket, and Aakjaer's 17.7-inch Arcus Console Shelf replace a nightstand. By the door, Heller's Swell Wall Catchall by Anna Dawson holds keys, wallets and glasses on a 3-inch-deep wave. Our guide to wall-mounted shelving covers fixings and load limits.

Small-Space Furniture That Does Two Jobs

A piece that does two jobs saves a whole footprint. Case's Altura Step Stool/Side Table by Patricia Perez stacks two solid-oak tiers into a step stool, side table, nightstand or plant stand, 21.7 inches wide. Lella and Massimo Vignelli's Vignelli Cube for Heller is a stool, side table, step stool or footrest, molded in the USA from recycled polyethylene. Tiptoe's LOU Stool by Armand Serafini was drawn to be at least four things, and its legs come off for transport.

Storage can multitask too. WOUD's Bricks Modular Storage cubes stack into a bookcase, a room divider or a bedside table, and the Tøjbox Wardrobe leans against the wall as a closet for homes that do not have one, 11.8 inches deep in its small size. On dinner-party nights, a Vignelli Cube or LOU Stool is also the extra seat.

How Small-Space Furniture Is Built to Last

Materials

Most of these pieces are made of one identifiable material: lacquered steel and aluminum from Fermob, solid oak from Ethnicraft and in Case's Altura stool, PEFC/FSC-certified oak from Tiptoe, and molded plastic from Heller, which uses 25 to 100 percent recycled plastic in some lines. Mater's Matek is a composite made from waste material, and Greenington's 48-inch Studio Plus Desk is solid Moso bamboo, a rapidly renewable grass.

Manufacturing

Fermob makes its furniture in its own factories in Thoissey, France, where rooftop solar supplies 15 to 42 percent of site power, according to our Sustainability Meter record. Tiptoe works with European partner workshops in France and Lithuania, and most of Heller's furniture is made in the USA.

Certifications & Recognition

Tiptoe has been a Certified B Corporation since 2022, listed in B Lab's directory. Mater won Wallpaper* magazine's Best Net Gain design award in 2019 for its Ocean collection. Furniture that comes apart is also furniture that can be repaired: Tiptoe's legs, LOU stools and SSD chairs separate into clean wood and steel, and Fermob sells spare parts.

Why We Built a Small-Space Collection

Several of the pieces our customers buy most often are small-space problem solvers: the Bistro folding set, Luxembourg chairs, Heller's Swell catchall and the Vignelli Cube. We are based in Brooklyn, where the dining room is usually a corner of the kitchen. So we grouped every piece that folds, stacks, extends, hangs on the wall or does two jobs into one place, and we only included pieces whose dimensions in inches are on the product page.

We also kept to our usual standard. Every brand in the collection is graded on our Sustainability Meter, and you can compare all of our sustainable furniture brands side by side. Small furniture is not an impulse purchase at these prices; it is the furniture you move with for the next decade. For renters, our guide to furniture that moves when you do goes deeper.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dining Tables for Small Spaces

What size dining table fits a small apartment?
For two people, a 24- to 28-inch round table works, such as Fermob's 24-inch Bistro or Mater's 27.6-inch Accent Cafe Table. Four people fit at Fermob's 28-inch square Bistro or Case's 43.3 x 29.5-inch Prinds Table, and Case's 43.3-inch square Bridge seats six with a leaf in. Leave 32 to 36 inches between the table edge and the wall for chairs, per the National Kitchen & Bath Association's planning guidelines.

Is an extendable or a folding table better for a small space?
An extendable table suits a home that hosts often, because it keeps a small everyday footprint and grows for guests: Ethnicraft's Bok goes from 47 to 71 inches. A folding table suits a room that has to become something else between meals, because Fermob's Bistro tables fold flat against a wall. Some small apartments use both, a folding Bistro in the kitchen or on the balcony and an extending table in the living room.

Which dining chairs stack the highest?
Fermob's Luxembourg and Opera+ side chairs stack ten high, Mater's Compound Dining Chair stacks eight without upholstery, and Heller's Bellini Chair and Tiptoe's SSD chair stack six. Fermob's Bistro chair folds flat instead of stacking.

How do I add storage without losing floor space?
Put it on the wall. Wall shelves like Tiptoe's PLI, a wall drawer like WOUD's Wallie or a floating console shelf like Aakjaer's Arcus can replace a bookcase or nightstand, and Ethnicraft's PI Wall-Mounted Desk needs no legs. Fix shelves into studs where you can, and if you rent, check your lease before drilling.

Is small-space furniture sustainable?
It can be, when it is built to last and to come apart. Tiptoe, a Certified B Corporation since 2022, screws steel legs into PEFC/FSC-certified oak-veneer tops so the two materials separate at end of life, and Fermob sells spare parts for furniture made in its own factories in France. Every brand in Comosum's small-space collection is graded on our six-category Sustainability Meter.

At Comosum, we curate sustainable furniture from independent and design-led brands, graded on our Sustainability Meter. Find dining tables for small spaces, stacking chairs, wall shelves and two-job stools in our small-space furniture collection, or read more in our journal.
